Introduction to Semiotics Preliminary Exercise 1
Working on projects with other students has helped me detect connotations and denotations more accurately. For instance, my collaborator Shadlikethat and I were tasked with making a poster that featured illustrations of numerous symbols. We had to consider the various connotative implications that each image might have. A black cat was one of the icons we used on our poster. Black cats are considered a sign of bad luck in some cultures and a symbol of death in others. We had to decide how to include these many connotations in our poster after taking them into account. I was able to observe through this activity how several meanings can be attached to the same image and how those meanings may alter depending on the situation. In general, investigating semiotics and learning about connotation and denotation have improved my understanding of how words and symbols are used to express meaning.
