Preliminary Exercise: Lighting in Film

A key component of film is lighting, which involves the use of light to alter the atmosphere, mood, and visual appeal of a scene. This can be done by modifying the position, brightness, and color of light sources to improve the storyline and help the audience understand the themes and emotions. The significance of lighting in a movie comes from its capacity to influence how the viewer interprets the plot, environment, and characters. The appropriate lighting can give a surreal or dreamlike impression or make a scene look more realistic, depending on the needs of the scene.
